This class will trace two distinct styles of Talmudic study: that of the yeshiva and that of the academy. Each week, we will examine a specific, usable technique for analyzing the various dimensions of rabbinic literature. The yeshiva learning will feature unique principles of analytic philosophy (lomdus) that students on every level can implement in their own studies. The academic method will reveal the intricate layers developed to construct each Talmudic section. The goal is for students to gain an appreciation for a more interdisciplinary approach to the Talmud. The aim will be to empower students, irrespective of their current level of study, to better appreciate the forest and the trees of rabbinic discussion.
