Nathaniel Helfgot is chair of the dept of Talmud and Rabbinics at the SAR High School in New York City. He serves as spiritual leader of Congregation Netivot Shalom in Teaneck, NJ . He is on the faculty of Yeshivat Chovevei Torah Rabbinical School and the Wexner Heritage Program. An alumnus of the Jerusalem Fellows program, he received ordina­tion from the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary and has an MA in Education from the David J. Azrieli Graduate School.

We will examine case studies that highlight the dilemmas, tensions and resolutions regarding conflict between halakhah and human ethical sensitivities. We will explore classical and modern rabbinic sources regarding the general issues of halakhah and ethics, followed by study of issues such as the killing of Amalekite minors or the status of minors of the condemned city (Ir Hanidachat), the status of the mamzer, priorities in health care, the burial of Jews who commit suicide, and other sensitive topics.
