This class will explore the competing views that are found with regard to women’s obligation in various mitzvot as expressed by the Babylonian Talmud versus rabbinic texts from the Land of Israel. We will see that many of the assumptions we often have with regard to women’s exemptions are found only in the Bavli, while Eretz Yisrael texts present far more inclusive positions. However, when it comes to aggadic texts, the reverse is often the case. Bavli narrative texts often showcase female subjects that are absent from earlier Eretz Yisrael parallels.
