Eliyahu Stern is Associate Professor of Modern Jewish Intellectual and Cultural History at Yale University. He received his Ph.D. from University of California, Berkeley. He is the author of The Genius: Elijah of Vilna and the Making of Modern Judaism and is currently working on a book project on the emergence of Jewish nationalism and the secularization of Eastern European Jewry. He is a Fellow of the Shalom Hartman Institute and a consultant to the Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw, Poland.

We will explore the theological and political debates surrounding the emergence of Chassidut in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. Specifically, we will address the history behind the movement and the type of social friction it generated in kitchens and study halls throughout eastern Europe.
