Heschel’s The Prophets
When Abraham Joshua Heschel (1907-1972), one of the greatest Jewish-American thinkers and social activists, understood that the Nazis were going to gain power, he decided to dedicate his PhD dissertation to the alternative of the ancient prophets of the bible. In 1962, he published an extended English version, which influenced MLK’s fight for civil rights in the US. How can the prophets help us today, in our new challenges? In this online class, we will read passages from this work in order to understand Heschel’s interpretation of the prophets as the source of his own actual philosophy and activism.
